ABOUT ME AND MY FAMILY
I am coach Lauren and I’m originally from Newmarket, but have lived downtown Toronto, in Colombia, Buenos Aires, Barbados, and on a 3-acre country property North of Toronto, but I have called Ottawa home for the last 8 years. We moved here in August 2015 when our first son Jack was 15 months old. Needless to say, we were surprised 2 months later to find out we were expecting again! Max was born in June 2016 🙂
I used to work in corporate marketing for a large bank, but decided to leave my job in 2010 and pursue my passion for health and wellness. While traveling South America in 2011 I got my Registered Holistic Nutritionist certification from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. In 2018 I completed my RYT-200 hour yoga teacher training.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS?
I can clearly remember the first time I went for a run outdoors. It was the summer of 2003 and I was working in the Western provinces of Canada doing marketing for Budweiser. My co-worker/became a friend for life was an avid runner, and she invited me one day. With the rocky mountains surrounding me, I remember loving how it made me feel – strong, energized, happy, motivated, and positive. After that pivotal jog, I started exercising regularly and making healthy food choices, and there was no turning back after that.
My exercise and nutrition philosophy has evolved since 2003. After having kids, I realized I not only need exercise and proper nutrition to get physically stronger, but mentally stronger as well. When my second son was 3 months old, I started waking up before my kids at 5am to make time for myself to exercise and get mentally prepared for the day. I was tired, but the benefits far outweighed the fatigue. I started doing this 2 mornings a week, then 3, then 5, now I wake up before my family 7 days a week. It’s a self-care habit that helps me be the best version of myself for those around me. I am passionate about helping others make changes to their exercise and nutrition habits to feel and look their best and live a healthy balanced lifestyle.
WHAT ARE YOUR FITNESS GOALS THESE DAYS?
I turned 40 this year, so my fitness goal is to continue moving my body everyday, and never use aging as an excuse to stop. Intense cardio or weight training class is what I love. I love outdoor running, and slowing down for a yoga class. Being active is important to me so that when my kids ask me to go swimming, biking, water skiing, snow skiing, or to play tennis or basketball with them – that I can do it. I want to stay physically and mentally strong for myself and my family for the next 40.
WHAT DOES FITNESS MEAN TO YOU?
Ask anyone that knows me, and they will tell you that exercise is part of my daily routine. It doesn’t matter where I am – cottage, vacation, Christmas holidays, I need to start my day moving my body. Movement is medicine. It releases feel good hormones in your brain, gives you energy, makes you stronger, and it’s really nice to see some abs, arm definition and a strong booty too 🙂
COACH LAUREN, TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD?
How long of a list can I make? I love pizza, dark chocolate, brie, manchego, feta, kettle chips, chia pudding, nut granola, berries, watermelon, peaches, bananas, kale, arugula, spinach, broccoli, snap peas, cucumber, bell peppers, basil, mint, rainbow trout, tuna, eggs, chicken, chickpea pasta, sun dried tomatoes, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, avocado, almond butter, edamame, sourdough, olive oil, coconut oil…I could go on 🙂
TELL US WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOURSELF?
That’s a difficult question. I’m often guilty of being very hard on myself, but there is so much talk today about self-love, which I think is so important. I love that I’m ok with being vulnerable. I’m OK with putting myself out there, and never giving up when faced with a challenge. Even though I may not feel like showing up and giving it 100% every day, I keep going. I always say to myself, just take it a step at a time today, and at each step, do your best. I think human nature is to look ahead and plan, but looking ahead a few hours, days, weeks, months and years can be overwhelming. Like I teach in my yoga classes, just focus on right now, on the moment, be grateful for this moment and be your best in this moment.

I love that LYB has created a supportive, inspiring, motivating community of trainers and members that promote health and wellness. Taking steps towards achieving your health and wellness goals hard, but the LYB community makes it that much easier to get started with your health and stick with it.
